Russian Dolls Inspired by the Pixies

I was lucky enough to be asked to participate in an art show inspired by the work of the Pixies, opening at the C.A.V.E gallery in September. You can check out the details on the facebook page here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Dig-for-Fire-an-Exhibition-of-Art-inspired-by-the-Pixies/172444472815858

I am painting a set of 5 physical Russian Nesting dolls for the show. Rather than focus on a specific song or lyric for inspiration, my process has been to endlessly listen to all of their albums while I sketch. As I’m drawing, I pick up on particular words, patterns, or riffs that inspire that shape the design. Here’s an example of what some of these sketches look like:

I also wanted to try something a little different with the dolls themselves; I wanted them to look different than conventional nesting dolls, both in terms of form and content. Rather than cover them in paint and apply a nice shiny varnish, I wanted to have some of the art process show through. This is probably a reaction to having worked on Stacking, where all of the art was created digitally -- with none of the physicality of the medium coming into play.

So I bought a wood burning kit and burnt in the lines of the design directly into the wood. This creates little valleys and cuts in the wood surface itself and creates an interesting “broken” line style. Having never used a wood burner before, it’s kind of slow-going and I also burnt one of my fingers. After the wood burning was done, I applied a few coats of transparent acrylic medium to seal everything and to also make sure that the paint would sit on the surface. Because I wanted some of the wood to show through and not cover up the wood burner “lines” entirely, I applied the paint pretty thinly, and having the surface sealed helped with that. Here’s a front and back view of the first doll. It’s still a work in progress, and I’ll undoubtedly tweak it as I develop the other dolls so that they all harmonize together.

Satanic Blob of Death

Another Petty Land card illustration. I'm too lazy to put it into the card format, but the text would read "A product of Heavy Metal back masking has manifested in Petty Land. It will not attack any members of Caligula. Lateral Thinking: 9 ".

All of which makes no sense to anyone who hasn't played Petty Land.

Heart Attack, Pettyland style

Another Pettyland card illustration. I dropped this one into the WIP card design. As with all of the illustrations, they are done in Photoshop.

Mx Missile Politician

Another Pettyland card illustration! A three headed 80's politician with an MX Missile spine.

Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee Hollow Eggs

Another fairy tale, of sorts. This is tweedle dee and tweedle dum -- if they were constructed from partially broken, hollow eggs with candy cane spinal columns. And wearing lederhosen, of course.

Pen and ink on actual paper.

Teapot with Lederhosen

A quick little ditty. Colored pencil, ink, watercolor, and marker on some rough newsprint type paper.

HEAD ISLAND

I've been VERY busy working on my new game Stacking but I had to finish at least one non-work related painting this year.

This little ditty is called Head Island, and is another in my pirate series. It's a gouache painting on print making paper.

Hanzel and Gretel Stove

I managed to get a bit of time to do some non-work art this last weekend. I did a ink and watercolor drawing of a Hanzel and Gretel stove. Not sure exactly where its going; its connected in someway to some of the fairy tale hell pieces I'm working on. I think there's some unspoken crime in the original fairy tale. Hanzel and Gretel were pretty obnoxious, wind up murdering the witch, and get away with it. Perhaps this is their punishment.

Pettland Creature - Priest

Been real busy at work, so not much going on here. I did sneak in another Pettyland card, though. This is a creature - a "priest". What's not to love about crucifix teeth adorning a mouth that is spitting MX missiles below a cluster of anus-like nostrils?

Surely I will burn.

Peasant Burning, Part Deux

After getting some feedback, I've decided to go with the "A Clockwork Orange" style cards for the upcoming 20th Anniversary Edition of Pettyland. I've also decided to increase the card size to 3"x3" (from the original 2"x2") after printing out the other prototypes and seeing how TINY they were. I must be over compensating for something.

I also redid the Peasant Burning illustration. I'm not used to working in such a small format, and I have to keep reminding myself to keep them simple. So, this version is simpler and reads better when printed out. Plus, it has a mushroom cloud of sorts, which was clearly missing from the last version.
